Cultprint is pleased to present our first print release of the year and our first collaboration with Malaysian artist Hoo Fan Chon.
Commercial Marine Fish (Pelagic) of Malaysia reimagines an official fisheries reference poster produced by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, transforming the scientific chart of pelagic fish into a playful all-fish restaurant menu.
Originally developed for Hoo’s 2021 exhibition The World Is Your Restaurant, the work “cooks” and styles each species according to traditional Chinese culinary aesthetics. The original taxonomy of morphology and measurement is subtly reframed as a visual catalogue of prepared dishes, reflecting on how cultural practices, food traditions, and class aspirations shape our understanding of the natural world.
Printed as an archival pigment print on 310gsm Hahnemühle 100% cellulose German Etching paper, the print measures 55 × 73 cm and is released in an edition of 88.
